Fabrics for Carnival and Costumes: What type of fabric to choose?

Publicado el 23 October, 2025

Carnival is just around the corner and we didn't want to miss the opportunity to dedicate a post to this special celebration.

Annually, the question of what is the best fabric for carnival becomes one of the most frequently asked. Satin fabric, tulle, and many more are the traditional fabrics that make up our costumes. Let's get to know them!

Satin Fabric

Tela Raso

Satin is no longer created solely from silk and has been made using different fibers, achieving almost the same result as the original. Different options for whatever effect you want to achieve in your garments.

Generally, satinette is used as a costume fabric as it is more economical but of lower quality. There are also satins that fall between both options, perfectly simulating the effect of natural satin, among which is our Amsterdam Satin.

Tulle

Tul

Its characteristic mesh shape has made Tulle one of the essential fabrics for every carnival. Whether to highlight specific areas of a costume or to form entire garments. There is no self-respecting carnival where this beloved fabric cannot be seen in one of the costumes present.

Like Satin, different fibers can compose it, natural or synthetic, used equally as some synthetics have managed to achieve an effect similar to natural. Our Elastic Tulle would be part of this last group.

Gauze

Gasa

Polyester gauze is one of the most widely used in textiles, as it achieves remarkable resistance and color definition. Therefore, it is no coincidence that when it comes to costumes, it is one of the most demanded fabrics. Its lightness gives garments a certain delicacy and fluidity.

At Waixo you can find synthetic gauzes of different textures and weights such as Ondas Bangkok or if you prefer transparencies, Gasa Góngora is perfect for you.

Woolen Fabric

Paño

For those who experience a cold and rainy carnival, you will find your greatest ally in woolen fabric. This fabric allows you to create both conventional and original garments without worrying about the cold or discomfort that other fabrics may cause. Additionally, it also allows for the creation of an outer garment that goes hand-in-hand with the rest of the costume, instead of resorting to the usual jacket that breaks with the created image.

Velvet

Another highly recommended fabric for cold weather is Velvet. In addition to keeping you warm, it achieves an elegant effect that rivals all other fabrics mentioned. Its softness and versatility make it one of the most appreciated fabrics in the textile world.
