What is the difference between a water-repellent fabric and a waterproof fabric?

Publicado el 23 July, 2020

The evolution of the textile industry has allowed us to solve many problems that have long presented continuous barriers in our daily lives. Whenever we want to stay dry, we turn to the same fabrics: Waterproof fabrics and water-repellent fabrics. But are they the same? We explain their differences in this post!

Waterproof Fabrics

These fabrics are those that have sufficient resistance to prevent both water and air from passing through. Therefore, waterproof fabrics are perfect for exposure to strong water pressures or severe weather conditions. This is why they are the best option to prevent continuous or intense rain.

The problem with these fabrics is that they do not breathe enough to dry quickly, so if some water seeps in, it probably won't disappear easily.

Water-Repellent Fabrics

These are fabrics that have received a treatment to prevent both moderate water pressures and humidity, since, unlike Waterproof Fabrics, water-repellent fabrics provide certain breathability in addition to preventing water absorption, so the level of pressure to which they can be subjected must be lower. Especially in upholstery, water-repellent fabrics are perfect because it is advisable that in addition to being water-resistant, fabrics have some degree of breathability so that air flows and humidity concentration does not welcome microorganisms.

Which one should I use then?

It's very easy. It depends on the product you are going to make or the use you want to give it, you will need one or the other.

  • If the fabric is expected to be subjected to a large amount of water pressure, it is advisable to use an waterproof fabric.

  • If you need a fabric that has some breathability and at the same time resists moderate pressures and humidity, water-repellent fabrics are the most suitable.
