Cotton Fabrics: Everything You Need to Know

Publicado el 22 January, 2019

Among our fabrics, you can find, in addition to polyester and polyamides, cotton fabrics. With this entry, we want to bring you closer to all the characteristics of this type of natural fabrics so that you know them in depth before acquiring метраage and so that you learn everything you need to know about fabrics such as twill, poplin or viyella, so useful in making shirts, suits, dresses... as well as all the garments you can think of. You can also get to know them better through our website.

Viyella Fabric: Ideal for winter

Viyella fabric or villela fabric is a fabric specially indicated for winter garments due to its ability to provide warmth even in the coldest environments. Among our fabrics, you can find this type of fabric, composed entirely of cotton, under the name of Viyella Moscow and with that particular diagonal weave that has made it so well known. The name "Viyella", which arose from the name of the city where it was born, is a registered trademark by a British firm that began to manufacture it by hand in 1784 and ended up also selling blouses, shirts and dressing gowns due to the success of its fabric.

Currently, it is an internationally exported fabric used to make garments as varied as suits, shirts, dresses, trousers, winter pajamas and, of course, children's clothes. If we can highlight something about our viyella fabric, it is its natural finish after the printing process, its good color fixation, its drape and its ease of being sewn and ironed. In addition, during the treatment we subject it to, the fabric goes through a washing process that ensures less shrinkage in subsequent cleanings, something that usually happens with garments made of cotton.

Twill Fabric: A fabric with history

Twill is a very classic fabric with a long history behind it; in fact, in recent days, we told you how it had been used to paint works in past eras. Its weave is also diagonal, as we saw previously with viyella fabric, but with more rigid properties and a higher grammage.

Our twill fabric is made of cotton, which makes it warm, thick and incredibly comfortable for making shirts and other timeless garments, such as trench coats or safari jackets. However, it is a light-textured twill that facilitates printing and a perfect finish; it also does not wrinkle easily and has an Öeko-Tex 100 certificate. So if you are interested in twill and want to see it live, don't forget to order our sample book, where you will also find 40 other interesting fabrics along with this Florencia Twill.

Voile Fabric: Light and soft

Among our fabrics, the softness of Cupid & Voile stands out, a very light voile fabric with a semi-transparent finish whose softness can be attributed to its cotton composition. It has a light and very pleasant drape that makes it ideal for making tops, both feminine and masculine, highlighting dresses, blouses, sarongs and shirts. Of course, children's and baby clothes also acquire an unparalleled softness using this voile fabric.

Its use in curtains and home textiles has also been very common, and its ability to be printed makes it a totally customizable alternative.

White Tiger: A fabric for spring

If we have to recommend a fabric for the spring-summer season, one of our choices would be the White Tiger: a cool and soft fabric, with an opaque appearance, which can be used to make both lower and upper garments. Among its peculiarities is its composition of cotton (97%) and elastane (3%); an element that gives it greater elasticity, perfect for enhancing the figure and obtaining a more fitted appearance of the garment. In addition, both its outer and inner sides have great softness and allow the printing of both very elaborate and simpler patterns, such as checks and stripes.

Satin Cotton Fabric: The White Satin

The White Satin fabric, composed of cotton and viscose, has a slightly satin finish that helps colors stand out as they should. Its touch is incredibly pleasant thanks to the slight percentage of viscose it contains and it is perfect for making tops. It irons easily and is very light, which gives it a good drape.

Organic Cotton Fabric: Betting on sustainability

At Waixo, we are committed to sustainable fashion, which is why among our fabrics we have a 100% organic cotton that is the great star of our sample book. We have already talked about the characteristics of this type of organic cotton and how it differs from normal cotton: cultivated on small plots of land, absence of fertilizers and pesticides in the process, and manual harvesting, which also helps to consume less energy, water and other natural resources.

Our Organic Vienna is soft and light, has a matte finish and the print adheres perfectly to its natural fibers. Its drape and texture make it ideal for making garments such as shirts and dresses. In addition, it has an Öeko-Tex 100 certification issued by the AITEX research center.

Poplin: A classic in shirtmaking

If you are thinking of launching a shirt collection, it is most likely that among your options you will find poplin fabric, a safe bet that provides a really good finish and whose slightly rigid and starched texture helps with better ironing, also favoring the correct appearance of the shirt, as it does not wrinkle easily.

Poplin originated in France in the 15th century in Avignon to make the Pope's vestments. A fact that caught our attention at Waixo and which we decided to transfer to our poplin fabric, naming it Poplin Verona. Throughout its history, poplin has also been used to make dresses and even in upholstery.

Corduroy: The most popular fabric

Those who don't understand fashion or fabrics may never have heard words like viyella or poplin, but they surely know corduroy. It is a classic winter fabric, suitable for making suits and trousers and is also an ideal alternative to our polyester-based velvet. Our Velvet Corduroy is made entirely of cotton and despite being a corduroy, its feel is not at all rough. Its parallel fibers are thin and its inner part is also very soft.
