Normally, we hear thread counts ranging from 50 to thousands; the higher the number, the softer and higher quality the fabric will be. As for layer construction, there are single or double-layer fabrics; the latter have two yarns in one to prevent wear. Fabrics with more than one hundred thread counts generally have a two-layer construction, which makes them more resistant.
